Runners: Are Superfeet insoles good for running long distances?
Best answer:
If he has not had knee pain before, the insoles are probably wrong for him; at least the combination of the shoe and the insole is wrong.
If the feet are tilted too much from side to side, some torque will be generated up the shin into the knee, causing them to twist and knees really hate that (they hate stairs, too). This might be the cause of a new pain in the knee. Increasing mileage too quickly can also cause the pain.
See: http://www.superfeet.com/Products/Orange.aspx
If you look at the demo of the Orange type, the side view shows quite a bit of camber; that could throw you off.
Try running with the insoles that came with the shoe. If that helps, the insole is to blame. Also give the knee an extra day to heal before experimenting.
Trial and error works pretty well. Unfortunately for me the error came at 23 miles into a marathon and I had to walk the rest of the way in; my foot was tilted 4°. I had orthotics made and the problem was solved.I have always found that confession is good for the sole. I used to run faithfully six days a week. I never fooled around once while I was jogging. Actually, I used to run 10K races, but I never used insoles. Knee pain may be something he is going to experience with or without the insoles. The pain may go away after awhile. It is hard to give an answer without knowing how long he has been running and whether his arches roll in(pronate) or roll out (supinate). If his arches roll out they will need more cushion in the running shoe because the arch does not collapse as much and will need more shock absorbancy. I hope this helps. I don't want you to think that I am a real heel. I try to keep instep with the latest trends. If I am wrong, feel free to sock it to me. I haven't been a serious runner in a long while( now when I run I play practical jokes) and I am not familiar with Superfeet insoles. I would go with the first answer. It sounds like the voice of experience. Have to go now. Gotta run.Buy a car instead, much quicker and more comfortable.
